L&P Announces Board Appointments

(Traverse City, Michigan) — At its regularly scheduled meeting yesterday, Traverse City Light & Power’s (L&P) Board re-elected its chairman, vice-chairman and secretary, and welcomed the newest member of the L&P Board.

Mike Coco was re-elected chairman of the Board, Linda Johnson was re-elected vice-chairperson and Ed Rice, executive director of L&P, was re-elected secretary of the Board. Each will serve a one-year term. Michael Estes, newly appointed by the City of Traverse City Commission to serve on the L&P Board for a term of five years, attended his first regular Board meeting.

“Having a citizen-owned electric utility is a huge asset that gives Traverse City many opportunities,” Coco said after his re-election. “I plan to continue to focus engaging our customers and getting them involved in the decision making process. There are many challenges that face the electric utility industry and our customers will have a say as to how Light & Power faces these issues.”

Coco has served three years on the L&P Board. Prior to being appointed by the city commission to the Board as a residential representative, he had chaired the economic development subcommittee of the Citizen's Operational and Financial Analysis Committee, studying the City's finances and operations, including the component units of Traverse City Light & Power, Downtown Development Authority, and the Traverse City Housing Commission. Coco is vice president of Choice Property Resources, Inc., headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. He and his family reside in Traverse City where he also volunteers on several nonprofit boards supporting youth rugby.

Linda Johnson, vice-chairperson, served as chairperson of the L&P Board from 2005 – 2007. She first served on the L&P Board from 1992 – 1999 and was reappointed as an at-large director in 2003. Johnson’s experience includes serving as a Traverse City commissioner for five years, including serving as mayor of Traverse City in 1993, and serving six years on the Traverse City School Board, including service as president of the school board in 1987. Johnson also owns her own business, Draperies on Wheels, and is a member of Traverse City Rotary Club. She and her family live at the Port of Old Mission.

Michael Estes served as mayor of Traverse City from November 2007 – 2009 and will bring a strong financial background to the board. Estes has served on numerous community boards, such as the Planning Commission and National Cherry Festival, and is a member of many local civic organizations. He is semi-retired and also serves as a Lake Michigan advisor on the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.  He and his wife have three adult children and are new grandparents.  He and his family have resided in Traverse City for 23 years.
