L&P Celebrating Earth Day with Annual Seedlings Giveaway

(Traverse City, Michigan) — Traverse City Light & Power (L&P) will be giving away free eastern white pine (pinus strobus) seedlings beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Sara Hardy Farmer’s Market in Traverse City (Union and Grandview Parkway), on April 21 in celebration of Earth Day.

2012 marks the 24th year L&P has celebrated Earth Day with a seedling giveaway. The seedlings come potted and ready for planting.

This Earth Day, L&P will also donate 10,000 white pine seedlings to local school children and youth groups through their partnership with the Grand Traverse Conservation District.

Since the beginning of the seedling giveaway program, L&P has donated nearly 160,000 seedlings to the community.

“Supporting the community and environment is one of Light and Power’s primary goals,” said Ed Rice, L&P executive director. “We hope the community takes advantage of this great opportunity to get some free trees at the annual seedling giveaway.”

When planting your new white pine seedlings, or any other trees, remember not to plant them under or near power lines. Low-growth shrubs and bushes are a better choice when planting in the vicinity of power lines.

For additional information on L&P’s seedling giveaway, and other Earth Day activities taking place in the Traverse City area, visit the L&P website (www.tclp.org).
