TCL&P’s 25th Annual Seedling Giveaway
(Traverse City, Michigan) — Traverse City Light & Power (TCL&P) will be giving away free eastern white pine (pinus strobus) seedlings beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Sara Hardy Farmer’s Market in Traverse City (Union and Grandview Parkway) on April 20th in celebration of Earth Day. The seedlings will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.
2013 marks the 25th year TCL&P has celebrated Earth Day with a seedling giveaway. In 1988, TCL&P held its first annual giveaway at the Bayside Power Plant, giving seedlings away to customers and local community groups. Since the beginning of the seedling giveaway program, TCL&P has donated over 140,000 seedlings to the Traverse City community.
“Supporting the environment and contributing to the community is one of the many goals of Light and Power,” said Tim Arends, interim executive director of TCL&P. “We hope the community takes advantage of this great opportunity to get some free trees at the twenty-fifth annual seedling giveaway.”
When planting your new white pine seedlings, or any other trees, remember not to plant them under or near power lines. If necessary, only plant low growth shrubs and bushes under, or in close vicinity of, power lines.
For additional information on TCL&P’s annual seedling giveaway, and other Earth Day activities taking place in the Traverse City area, visit the TCL&P website at www.tclp.org or see this month’s bill insert.
